Masum Murtaza is a Lecturer, Module Leader, and Academic Consultant based in Sheffield, United Kingdom. With over fifteen years of experience spanning UK and international higher education, he brings a distinctive blend of scholarly rigour, practitioner insight, and a genuine commitment to student success to everything he does.
Currently delivering teaching at Fairfield School of Business across partnerships with Ravensbourne University London, Bath Spa University, and Birmingham Newman University, Masum leads modules in Business Strategy (BSM22104) and Business Environment (BSM22004). His teaching philosophy is grounded in constructive alignment and Universal Design for Learning — ensuring that every student, regardless of background, is supported to achieve their full academic potential.
As a researcher, Masum's primary scholarly interest lies at the intersection of emotional intelligence, organisational commitment, and employee performance. His doctoral research — currently in progress — investigates how emotional intelligence shapes individual work performance in the UK service sector, mediated by organisational commitment, employing Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with bootstrapped mediation analysis. This work draws on established psychometric instruments including the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS), Meyer and Allen's Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, and the Individual Work Performance Questionnaire (IWPQ).
Masum holds an MSc in International Marketing from Sheffield Hallam University, an MBA with First Class Distinction and Gold Medal from the University of Rajshahi — where he graduated top of his cohort — and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (Merit) from Birmingham Newman University, through which he attained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is also a Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI) and holds the PGCHE and CMBE designations.
Beyond the academy, Masum serves as President of Sheffield Muslim Society, where he leads community education initiatives and represents a large and diverse constituency across South Yorkshire. He is available for consultancy engagements in business strategy, marketing, research methods, organisational behaviour, and higher education advisory work.
My scholarship sits at the intersection of organisational behaviour, marketing strategy, and higher education pedagogy — with a particular focus on how affective factors shape individual and organisational outcomes in service-intensive environments.
This module equips students with the analytical tools and strategic thinking skills needed to evaluate competitive environments and make informed business decisions. Drawing on industry case studies and real-world scenarios, students explore how organisations formulate and implement strategy in dynamic and uncertain markets.
Core frameworks include Porter's Five Forces, PESTLE Analysis, SWOT, Value Chain Analysis, and the Resource-Based View. Teaching is delivered through interactive lectures, group-based case study analysis, and applied problem-solving activities.
This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the external and internal forces that shape organisational decision-making. Students examine how macro-environmental factors interact with market dynamics to create both challenges and opportunities for business.
The module emphasises critical analysis and real-world application, with students developing the ability to assess environmental complexity and advise on strategic responses.
This Creative Ventures module represents an opportunity for students to showcase their creative flair, problem-solving skills, and entrepreneurial mindset. Drawing inspiration from inquiry-based teaching and learning, the module will enable students to develop an idea related to a start-up tailored to their area of interest and desired progression route.
Through an authentic real-world challenge, students will explore innovative solutions, cultivating critical thinking, research, and problem-solving abilities. The venture creative project will serve as a launchpad to inspire their future studies and career aspirations, whether in content creation, marketing, design, fashion, or general business.
The module empowers students to harness their creativity, develop their professional skills, and present a suggested business venture idea that demonstrates their unique talents and potential. Students will collaborate with their tutor to pitch suggestions and deliver a final project idea that reflects their interests, passions, and dedication.
My approach ensures learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessments form a coherent whole. I apply UDL principles to make content accessible and intellectually engaging for all students, embedding authentic assessment and reflective practice throughout. Research-informed teaching is central to my identity as an academic.
